Coolie Data Viz

Exploring the Coolie Trade of the 19th Century using data visualization.

Creator: Craig Burdulis

This website was created in fulfillment of the La Salle University Honors Program's Senior Honors Project, in which I am analyzing the Coolie Trade of the 19th century using data visualization models. This project hopes to uncover new ways of understanding the history of the Coolie Trade and to bring awareness to this often-ignored historical phenomenon which is at the crossroads of histories of labor, diplomacy, and migration in the mid 19th century. This project is tangentially related to ongoing research as part of my Senior History Seminar, in which I am researching the relationship between the Chinese imperial government and overseas Chinese communities in Latin America, within the context of the Coolie Trade and the decades following its demise.

I would like to thank several individuals for their support in this project:

Dr. Conrad Gleber, for his thought-provoking discussions that led me to using data visualization models in this analysis and his support throughout the process.

Dr. Charles Desnoyers, for his assistance with research related to the Coolie Trade and the Qing Empire's reaction to the Trade.

Dr. Luisa Ossa, for first exposing me to the history of the Coolie Trade and the Cuba Commission, which I had never learned about prior to taking her classes in Latin American literature and the Asian presence in Latin America.
